The Characteristics of Okinawa
With its emerald green waters so clear you can see the ocean floor, and a warm climate all year round,
Okinawa is Japan's number one resort destination, and attracts many tourists no matter the season.
After Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido, Okinawa is a popular travel destination for foreign visitors to Japan. Its seas, nature,
unique food culture, diverse array of sightspeeing spots and gentle people are always ready to welcome visitors.
-
Bountiful Nature
The highly transparent emerald green seas around Okinawa are home to hundreds of types of coral, as well as schools of brightly colored tropical fish. Surrounded by such beautiful waters are various attractive tourist locations such as Shuri Castle Park, which conveys the history and culture of Okinawa, Churaumi Aquarium, famous for its whale sharks and being the largest aquarium in Japan, Naha Kokusai Dori, or "international road", the main street of Okinawa's main island, and the many outlying islands.
-
Okinawa's Unique Food Culture
Okinawa has a unique culinary culture. Vegetables from the tropical temperate zone, local livestock such as pigs, royal court cuisine influenced by China during the Ryukyu dynasty, and the influence of American food culture in the postwar era have all combined to give rise to a distinct culinary culture based on the local traditions and historical background. Unique Okinawan dishes such as Okinawa soba, bitter melon stir-fry, and "umi budou", or sea grapes, have been enjoyed by many visitors.
-
Classic Sweet Treats Souvenir
"Beni imo", or purple sweet potato flavored sweets are popular among foreign visitors, such as the beni imo tart, a luxurious tart made from beni imo paste with a unique color and sweetness, making it a must-buy item. Another classic Okinawan sweet souvenir is Chinsuko, a salty-sweet addictive treat made from Okinawan salt.
-
Specialty Okinawan Alcohol
When it comes to alcohol that pairs well with Okinawan food, it has to be "Awamori". Awamori is a type of shochu, but because it uses thai rice and differing preparation and distillation methods, it is classified separately. One distinctive feature of awamori is its high alcohol content, often around 30%, but in some cases even exceeding 50%. It would be nice to slowly enjoy a glass of awamori on the rocks paired with Okinawan cuisine.
-
Okinawan Colorful Knick-knacks
Also be sure to be on the lookout for Okinawan knick-knacks. Ryukyu glass has beautiful colors that are blended together, and there are facilities where you can experience glassblowing for yourself. You can make your own original glass piece as a memento of your journey. Many knick-knacks based on the "Shisa", the guardian deity of Okinawa, are popular as good luck charms for warding off evil spirits. There are shisa with a variety of expressions, so please find one that suits your tastes!
